According to the website of the People’s Daily of Vietnam, the mango planting area in Vietnam has reached 87,000 hectares, of which the Kowloon River Delta accounts for 48%. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam has set a target of 140,000 hectares of mango planting in the country by 2030, with an output of 1.5 million tons, an export value of US$650 million, and 70% of the fresh-keeping processing plants reaching advanced technologies.
China is the main export market for Vietnamese mangoes. 83.9% of Vietnam’s mangoes are exported to China, with an export value of US$152 million. Followed by Russia, the United States, South Korea, the European Union, Australia and Japan and other countries. In 2020, Vietnam’s mango production reached 880,000 tons, an increase of 4.9%. However, due to the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia and strict border import and export control policies, fruit exports fell during the same period, especially to China, which fell by about 25%.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam’s Agricultural Products Processing and Market Development Agency, Vietnam’s mango exports in 2020 will exceed US$180 million, accounting for only 1.15% of the world’s total mango exports. The unit stated that a prerequisite for exporting mangoes is origin traceability. In 2020, the Jiulong River Delta received 271 planting area codes. In particular, 1,789 hectares of Vietnamese mangoes are planted with the Vietnam Good Agricultural Practice (VietGap) certification standard and the Global Good Agricultural Practice Standard (GLOBAL GAP) standard, accounting for 3.8% of the total mango area. Therefore, it is necessary to further expand the mango planting area to meet export requirements.
